Check with the player manufacturer for their current firmware version-just make sure it addresses the Windows formatting issue before you install it. Note that later versions of the MuVo firmware will support the native Windows formatter (FAT16/FAT32, not NTFS). Always opt to use the player’s “format” feature provided through its software application. In effect, a Windows format might turn the player into a simple flash drive, forcing you to recover the firmware to restore the player’s operation. However, players such as the MuVo might not accept the generic Windows format process-formatting a device under Windows might overwrite the firmware (also recorded on the flash memory) and disable the player capability. Drives must be formatted before the operating system can access files on the device. Windows treats MP3 players such as Creative Labs’ MuVo and other USB flash storage devices as removable drives. MP3 players are basically a block of flash memory with some firmware used to operate controls, manage music files, and handle playback of MP3 files. The MuVo should appear as a Removable Disk with the new letter in My Computer. Now restart the computer and log onto the network if necessary. Select the MuVo’s drive letter, click the Change button, and change the letter to one not currently used on the system (e.g., change E to H). When you plug in the USB cord, two extra drive letters will show.

Browse the Storage → Disk Management area, right-click the MuVo’s drive letter, and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths” (see Figure 4-17). However, Insignia mp3 players can use the generic mass storage driver in almost any computer. Once you see the Removable Disk listed, open the Administrative Tools control panel, then double-click the Computer Management icon. If not, try the unit in another USB port.
The MuVo should appear as a Removable Disk in My Computer. Next, reboot the system and make sure you log on with an Administrator account (or another user account with full administrative privileges).
